During our 2006 stay in Italy, my wife and I made a day trip to see San Marino. Not knowing what to expect, we kidded that it might just look like any other Italian town when we got there, but hoped it would be something special. Well, San Marino did not disappoint. As we approached from the east, the huge and dramatic stone monolith on which it is built, rose dramatically out of the flat countryside, complete with castles and fortresses on the top. It looked like something out of a Lord of the Rings movie! A fairytale DX location.
